However, neglecting self-care can lead to burnout, stress, and even negatively impact our mental health. It’s all too easy forget to prioritise ourselves amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, belive me, I’ve done it and I preach this guff. Self-care is about tuning in to our own needs and taking deliberate actions to nurture our minds, bodies, and souls.įor me, a daily non negotiable is getting into the gym to get hot and sweaty. Self-care is not just about hugging trees and indulging in luxurious salt baths (though they can be awesome too!). Today, on this special day, I want to take a moment to remind all of you about the importance of self-care for our mental health and overall well-being. So no: reasonable adjustments aren’t special treatment. This is why it is imperative that employers trust and value the validity of their talent’s lived experience, being an active listener and working together to set them up with the reasonable adjustments they need to thrive in their role. That doesn’t make its needs any less real or worthy of support. The brain is an intangible organ, unknowable to everyone except the person whose thoughts, experiences and perceptions it governs. Reasonable adjustments for neurodivergent employees, whether that’s written instructions or a sensory-friendly working environment, ought to be no different. Nor does anyone insist that everyone’s glasses are taken away in the interest of “fairness”.Ĭenturies of normalisation has rightfully ingrained this knowledge in us that some people need glasses and others don’t, to the point where it is now deemed unremarkable and nobody even thinks of it as a reasonable adjustment some people need to do their job. Nobody insists that I take them off because “if I have glasses, we’d have to give everyone else glasses too, regardless of whether they need them or not. When I need to see things better at work, I wear my glasses. Let me explain why this couldn’t be further from the truth. One of the most common misconceptions about reasonable adjustments is that their very existence constitutes “special treatment”.
